Problem-Solving Skills

Basic Mathematics • School learning materials

Learning objectives

Choose suitable methods, show working and check whether answers make sense.

By the end of this course, you should be able to explain the key ideas, use the methods and answer practice questions.

Lesson notes

Understand the problem

Read carefully. Identify what is known and what needs to be found.

Choose a method

Decide whether to add, subtract, multiply, divide, draw a diagram or use an equation.

Show your working

Write each step clearly so that another person can follow your reasoning.

Check the answer

Estimate first, then check the calculation and units.

Example

A class has 24 pupils. They form teams of 4. Number of teams = 24 ÷ 4 = 6.

Worked example

A bus has 40 seats. If 27 are occupied, empty seats = 40 − 27 = 13.

Practice quiz

Enter an answer for each question. Then select Check answers. For fractions, use forms such as 1/2.
