Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Basic Mathematics • School learning materials

Learning objectives

Represent parts of a whole and convert between fractions, decimals and percentages.

By the end of this course, you should be able to explain the key ideas, use the methods and answer practice questions.

Lesson notes

Fractions

A fraction has a numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number). In 3/4, 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator.

Equivalent fractions

Equivalent fractions have the same value. For example, 1/2 = 2/4 = 4/8.

Decimals

Decimals use place value after a decimal point. For example, 0.5 means five tenths.

Percentages

Percent means out of 100. For example, 25% = 25/100 = 0.25 = 1/4.

Finding a percentage

To find 10% of 80, calculate 80 ÷ 10 = 8.

Worked example

To convert 3/4 to a percentage: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75, and 0.75 × 100 = 75%.
