Lesson notes

Whole numbers and place value

A digit's value depends on its position. In 4,582, the 4 represents 4 thousands, the 5 represents 5 hundreds, the 8 represents 8 tens and the 2 represents 2 ones.

Integers

Integers are whole numbers, their negatives and zero: … −3, −2, −1, 0, 1, 2, 3 …

Comparing and ordering

Use > to mean greater than and < to mean less than. For example, 17 > 9 and −2 < 1.

Roman numerals

I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500 and M = 1,000.

Worked example

In 5,307, the digit 3 is in the hundreds position, so its value is 300.
